Nestled in the heart of Petite-Patrie, Montreal, this unique renovation project by _naturehumaine breathes new life into a classic duplex on Garnier Street. The goal? To transform the traditional two-storey structure into a contemporary cottage, complete with a cozy rental studio in the basement.
The original duplex, part of a row of identical homes on narrow, deep lots, underwent a striking transformation to meet the clients’ vision: a home that combines urban living with the warmth of a modern-day chalet. At the center of this vision is “La Cache,” a suspended watchtower-like volume that seamlessly integrates rustic charm with contemporary design.
A Modern-Day Chalet in the Heart of the Home
The standout feature of this project is “La Cache,” a rectangular wooden volume that redefines the concept of a winter living room. Designed to evoke the ambiance of an urban chalet, “La Cache” is suspended above the ground floor terrace, offering both a cozy retreat and a visually striking architectural element.
The wooden cladding of “La Cache” extends from the interior to the exterior, creating a seamless connection that enhances its feeling of being nested within the existing structure. Inside, a fireplace takes center stage, adding warmth and character. A custom-built wooden cabinet connects “La Cache” to an open bathroom, which is adorned with bluish ceramic tiles and provides views of both the fireplace and the garden.
Bright and Airy Design with Dynamic Flow
The home’s circulation is defined by a white steel staircase with openwork oak steps, positioned at the heart of the design. This staircase, located in a dramatic double-height space, bridges the entrance and the watchtower. At the top of the staircase, a large skylight floods the space with natural light, illuminating the living areas on the ground floor.
A footbridge connects the staircase to “La Cache,” creating a dynamic interplay between spaces and materials. This thoughtful design enhances the open flow of the home, blending contemporary elements with the natural warmth of wood.
A Connection to Nature
The transformation extends to the rear façade, which now features a large, expansive window. Framed by the original brick walls, this window offers stunning views of the lush garden from every floor, further blurring the line between indoor and outdoor living.
