Nestled in the breathtaking high desert landscape of Sedona, Arizona, the Telescope House is a masterfully designed retreat by Wendell Burnette Architects. Spanning 1,600 square feet (149 square meters), this modern cabin serves as a peaceful nature getaway for its owners, who plan to make it their full-time residence in the future. When not in use, the property is available as a rental, offering guests a one-of-a-kind experience in the heart of the red rock country.

A Home Designed to Blend with Nature

The primary goal behind the Telescope House was to create a low-impact dwelling that seamlessly merges with its natural surroundings. The home is strategically positioned within a telescopic frame of mature Juniper trees, drawing the eye toward the stunning Cathedral Rock formation. This awe-inspiring view is particularly mesmerizing at reverse sunset, when the deep red hues of the rock contrast beautifully against the pale cliffs of Munds and Lee Mountain.

The architectural design takes inspiration from a land-based telescope. Clad in weathering iron oxide steel, the home extends toward the view, with an east-facing sitting room that doubles as a shaded balcony. This space is ideal for enjoying Sedona’s famous moonrises and dramatic desert skies.

A Thoughtful Interior Layout

Inside, the home is carefully arranged to balance privacy and openness. The western side houses two bedrooms, a primary suite, and a carport, while the eastern section features an open-concept kitchen, dining area, and living room. A small basement level also adds a fun element with a game room.

One of the most striking features of the interior is the central corridor, which leads the eye toward a floor-to-ceiling glazed wall that frames sweeping views of the rugged terrain. This intentional design choice ensures that the beauty of the desert landscape is always at the forefront.

Sleek, Sustainable Design Features

To maintain a connection with the natural surroundings while minimizing light pollution, the Telescope House embraces dark interiors. This keeps the house from glowing unnaturally at night, preserving Sedona’s dark-sky community status. It also enhances the experience of feeling fully immersed in the landscape, as if floating within the desert scenery.

Sustainability is at the core of the home’s design. All floors, walls, ceilings, doors, and cabinets are crafted from recycled wood panels, infused with a rich dark pigment, then waxed and buffed for a sleek, polished finish. High-use areas receive an additional lacquer coating for durability.

Seamless cabinetry and a raised countertop in the kitchen cleverly conceal clutter, maintaining the home’s minimalist aesthetic.
