Beijing-based practice FESCH has restored an old dwelling located in a “Zayuan” of an old town in Beijing. Zayuan is based on a traditional Chinese architecture form called Siheyuan. It is the relationship between a central courtyard and surrounding living spaces.

The architects have rebuilt the relationship between the living spaces and the Zayuan environment. A new courtyard with the gray brick wall was inserted between the existing houses.

The bathroom and storage area is placed inside a box. The space between the box and the pitched roof above it serves as the bedroom.
