Located in the beautiful wooded region of Lilla Kilskäret, an island near Stockholm, Sweden, A House is a minimalist Nordic cabin designed by Studio Nāv for a young couple as a summer getaway. The cabin’s idyllic location, among picturesque surroundings, creates a peaceful and calming atmosphere.
However, building the cabin was not without its challenges. The site and local building regulations presented obstacles that required the cabin to have a small footprint and blend in with its surroundings. In response, the architects designed the interiors to be open, free-flowing, and flexible. The single open room that serves as both the living area and bedroom is enclosed by glass, allowing the cabin to harmoniously merge with the landscape and creating a sense of being at one with nature.
The cabin was constructed using a glulam framework, which made the process efficient, and the generous use of timber in the exterior and interior adds to the cabin’s connection to the environment. The three translucent glass sides of the cabin can be opened to unite the interiors with the outdoors, but the cabin also includes a massive drapery that can cover the facades for privacy, as well as a detachable black mesh on the exterior to conceal the cabin from the water.
Overall, A House is a beautiful and serene cabin that captures the essence of minimalist Nordic architecture and allows its residents to escape the city and find peace and tranquility in nature.
