Italian practice Archiplan Studio have renovated and built a small volume within a studio apartment in Mantova, Italy. The Monolocale Studio Apartment was designed in a way that pays homage to the history and character of the space, while also creating a sense of intimacy and privacy within the unified interior. The selective openings allow for visual connections with the surrounding space, and the use of the washbasin as a piece of furniture and the closet as a textile system adds a unique touch to the design. The walls, with their stratification and signs of different ages, are also incorporated into the design and given equal importance, creating a sense of character and authenticity. The frames from the 1980s, with their anodized aluminum handles, are also preserved as a nod to a different era and aesthetic. Overall, it seems like the design of this small volume is meant to be thoughtful and layered, incorporating elements of the past and present to create a cohesive and meaningful space.
